How Your Eyes Work
The eye is an approximately spherical bag of cells less than 1 inch in diameter, which is filled with a pressured liquid. At the front is the cornea, which is a window of transparent cells that allows light to enter the eye. Behind the cornea is the iris, which is a diaphragm of muscle that controls the amount of light entering the eye.
How Eye Exercises Work
During the last few decades, many simple techniques known as vision therapy eye exercises have been developed that can make the eyes healthier and reduce or even eliminate dependency on corrective lenses. In contrast to physical exercises, vision therapy eye exercises are not strenuous and increase the power and accuracy of the focusing system rather than beefing up the eye muscles.
More About Corrective Lenses
As you probably know from your own experience, corrective lenses usually create dependency and lead to a vicious cycle of progressively weaker eyes and stronger prescriptions. In fact, recent research shows that corrective lenses can cause or aggravate the visual problems they are supposed to correct.
Astigmatism and Eye Exercises
Astigmatism is a condition in which the eyeball and/or cornea are warped. The result is uneven focusing and blurred or distorted vision. By making the eyes more symmetrical, vision therapy eye exercises can improve astigmatism and reduce dependency on corrective lenses.
Myopia (Nearsightedness) and Eye Exercises
Myopia (nearsightedness) is a condition in which near objects are seen better than far objects. Although myopia can be inherited, the major cause is too much reading, computers, and TV. By making the eyes stronger and healthier, vision therapy eye exercises can improve myopia naturally and reduce dependency on corrective lenses.
Presbyopia (Aging Eyes) and Eye Exercises
Presbyopia is a condition where the eye loses its focusing power due to the aging process. Although the aging process cannot be avoided, a lot can be done to reduce its impact on the visual system. By making the eyes stronger and healthier, vision therapy eye exercises can improve presbyopia and reduce dependency on corrective lenses.
Hyperopia (Farsightedness) and Eye Exercises
Hyperopia (farsightedness) is a condition in which far objects are seen better than near objects and is usually inherited. By making the eyes stronger and healthier, vision therapy eye exercises can improve hyperopia naturally and reduce dependency on corrective lenses.
Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) and Eye Exercises
Amblyopia (lazy eye) is a condition where the brain suppresses the nerve impulses from one eye. In most cases there is nothing physically wrong with the lazy eye, although it may turn inward or outward resulting in crossed eyes (strabismus). By making the eyes stronger and healthier, vision therapy eye exercises can improve amblyopia and reduce dependency on corrective lenses.
Lasik Surgery and Eye Exercises
Lasik surgery involves reshaping the cornea and is considered to be a safe and reliable procedure that can produce major improvements in refractive error. Lasik does nothing to make the eyes stronger and healthier, however, and the results may be improved by means of vision therapy eye exercises.
Cataract and Eye Exercises
The eye's inner lens consists of transparent cells. When these cells die, usually as a result of ultraviolet light and poor nutrition, the dead cells block light from passing through the lens and the result is known as a cataract. A combination of vision therapy eye exercises and nutritional supplements including antioxidants and n-acetyl-carnosine may dissolve the cataract and avoid the need for surgery.
Understanding Eye Exercises
Just as you can improve your body with physical exercises, you can improve your eyesight naturally with eye exercises, often reducing or eliminating dependency on corrective lenses. There are three major types of eye exercises: Bates Method eye exercises, vision therapy eye exercises, and optometric vision therapy.
Understanding Vision Therapy
Vision therapy is to the eyes what physical therapy is to the body, a system of natural techniques intended to restore the injured organ to normal. Vision Therapy is based on the principle that since the eyes are part of the body and the body can heal itself, the eyes can also heal themselves.
